The 2004 TIME Story & 2022 McGill Paper Showing When Inflammation Is Not the Enemy – And Demonstrating Through Knee and Shoulder Examples
Join Steve H. Liu, LAc., BSEE for a clinical discussion of TIME’s 2004 cover story on chronic inflammation and the 2022 McGill University paper published in Science Translational Medicine. He will show why the acute inflammatory response is the mechanism that decides whether pain fully resolves or lingers for years, and how the FAST Protocol takes a stalled chronic state back to acute so the body can finish healing it. Knee and shoulder joints are the working examples throughout.

In 2004, TIME named chronic inflammation as the common driver behind heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. In 2022, McGill researchers proved that blocking the acute version of it is what turns an injury into a chronic pain condition.
“The beginning of the inflammatory process programs its resolution.“
Parisien et al., Science Translational Medicine, May 2022
That one sentence reverses the standard playbook. Mice given early NSAIDs or steroids felt better fast, then hurt far longer. Depleting their neutrophils delayed resolution. Restoring neutrophils, or the S100A8/A9 protein those cells release, prevented the drug-induced chronic pain entirely. The UK Biobank data showed the same pattern in people. Those who took NSAIDs for acute back pain were more likely to still have that pain two to six years later.
In this session, Steve traces the thread from the 2004 article forward, then moves to the clinical application. The FAST Protocol does the counterintuitive thing. It takes a stalled, chronic-inflammatory knee or shoulder back into a completed acute response, using photobiomodulation to accelerate cellular and mitochondrial activity rather than block the cascade.
This clinically focused live discussion will help you learn:
- Why the 2004 TIME cover story named chronic inflammation as the shared driver behind heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes, and the one thing it could not offer as a solution
- How early NSAIDs and cortisone relieve pain short term while measurably prolonging it, shown three separate ways: human transcriptomics, mouse models, and a UK Biobank cohort
- What neutrophil activation actually does in pain resolution, and why patients whose pain persisted showed almost none of it
- Why photobiomodulation works with the inflammatory cascade instead of blocking it, and how that reframes the dosing goal from “reduce inflammation” to “help the body finish what acute inflammation started”
- How the FAST Protocol takes a chronic knee or shoulder joint back to an acute state so it can fully heal, walked through with both joints as worked examples
